If you in need of emergency safe shelter because of domestic violence, please call AWAIC’s 24-hour crisis and support line at (907) 272-0100 to speak to a trained advocate.

  • Open & Inclusive: AWAIC’s shelter is open to survivors and their children who are in danger due to domestic violence. AWAIC serves ALL survivors, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, age, race, ethnicity, religion, and national origin. The shelter is also accessible to survivors with disabilities.
  • Layout: The shelter includes 67 beds with one bathroom for every two bedrooms. Common areas include two living rooms, a teen center, a children’s playroom and playground, a commercial kitchen, and dining and laundry rooms.
  • Safe: All areas are secured and monitored 24 hours a day.
    Free & Confidential: All of AWAIC’s services are 100% free and confidential.
  • Referrals: Referrals from a service provider are not required to seek shelter at AWAIC.
  • Transportation: If you need assistance with transportation to the shelter, please call (907) 272-0100 to speak with an advocate.
  • Length of Stay: The average length of stay in the shelter is 30 days. Extensions may be available on a case-by-case basis if survivors need additional time to decide what to do next.
  • Voluntary: AWAIC’s services are offered on a voluntary basis in order to empower the survivors in our shelter to choose their own path forward.
  • Children: Children of all ages are welcome at AWAIC’s shelter. We have advocates who are specially trained in working with children to help them gain confidence and understand they are not the cause of what they have seen at home. AWAIC has play areas for each age group, an outdoor playground, and arranged transportation to school. Children’s advocates also provide support to parents with education and referrals.

Safe Haven for Pets

Domestic violence survivors with pets may feel reluctant to leave an abusive situation if they cannot ensure the safety of their beloved companions. AWAIC has a program to help you and your pets.
